Urðr

Urðr is the third shawl in a series of three shawls on the theme of the three Norns (Urðr, Verðandi and Skuld) in Norse mythology. The determine the fate of all living creatures by spinning the threads of life. And they care for the great world tree Yggdrasil so the branches do not dry out or rot.

In Norse mythology, the water the Norns use to care for Yggdrasil comes from Urðr’s well, so the shawl is circular to represent the well.  It starts out dark in the centre and the water rings radiate towards the edges.  The edging show the water lapping against the side of the well, and the waves have some white crests.

The shawl is knit from the centre out. The pattern is charted, and the lace pattern is only on every other row.
