On February 16, 2009, in KAL, lace, Mystic Roses, pattern, shawl, by Anna

Announcing the Mystic Roses Lace Shawl knitalong!

Mystic Roses is a triangular shawl inspired by roses of every hue.

The finished height is approximately 134 cm (52”), and the wingspan is 268 cm (105″).

My shawl is knit on 3.75 mm needles, using Wollmeise Lace-Garn yarn (530 m/580 yds per 100 g) in the Rosenrot colourway.
The shawl uses one 300g skein (approx 1,590 m / 1,740 yds).

As always, yarn substitutions are encouraged.
My actual yarn consumption was approx 1,450 m (1,570 yds).
Any lace-weight or light fingering weight yarn will work. Some suggestions are JaggerSpun Zephyr, Malabrigo, Misti Alpaca Lace, Yarntopia Treasures 5/2 Egyptian Cotton or 5/2 Tencel, or Cottage Craft Angora 2-ply lace yarns.

Ironwrought Scarf

On February 9, 2009, in Ironwrought, lace, pattern, scarf, by Anna

The Ironwrought Scarf is inspired by old iron wrought gates and fences. It’s a warm, yet light and lacy scarf that will make you feel dressed up any day of the week.

The scarf is knit in Silkie Socks that Rock (in the Valkyrie colourway) from Blue Moon Fiber Arts – 360 yds (329 m) per 99 g skein. The length is of course adjustable, but with one skein you get a scarf which is approx. 28 cm x 202 cm (11″ x 80″).

This pattern is available in .pdf format for $8.00 CDN.

Scarves, Hufflepuff and Blocking Wires

On February 8, 2009, in scarf, sweater, yarn, by Anna

I started knitting a lace scarf out of Silkie Socks that Rock (merino/silk blend), from Blue Moon Fiber Arts the other day. The colourway is called Valkyrie, and looks really neat. It’s not quite as black as I thought – it’s black overdyed with shades of red, which makes it look purple, brown and green in parts. I like it though, and it’s really wonderfully soft. I should have some pictures of the scarf up in the next few days.
The intended recipient is Mina, who has agreed to trade one of her wonderful bags for a lace scarf. It will be a flippflapp style bag, that will become my new knitting bag.
But just in case this scarf is not black enough, I will make a second one in licorice Apple Laine.

I have also started a third Weasley sweater. This time it’s a Hufflepuff sweater for my youngest. The colours are gold and black. I’m altering the pattern quite a lot this time around. I decided to knit the body and the sleaves in the round, so as to minimize the amount of sewing I have to do at the end. I have knit half the body since Friday, so just as before, it’s a quick knit. And that’s probably a good thing, since it’s a winter sweater, and it’s best if he gets a chance to wear it a few times before spring comes.

On Friday I made a quick visit to my LYS and picked up some yarn – the Paton’s Classic Merino Wool required for the Weasley sweater, some Apple Pie/Apple Laine in licorice colour for a black lace scarf, and some blocking wires. I’ve been meaning to order blocking wires from Knitpicks for ages, but they were out of stock before Christmas, and then I just haven’t gotten around to it. But with the current exchange-rate, taxes, and shipping to Canada, I got a much better deal on some EZ-blocking wires locally. I tried them out today, and while my shawl isn’t dry yet, I really thought it made the entire process a lot simpler. I think I will like the result too.

Fish Hat III

On January 17, 2009, in hat, by Anna

If you have children, you’ll understand why I had to make a third fish hat. 😀 Of course each child deserves their very own hat.

This one was also knit with a slightly modified pattern – I cast on 72 stitches. The yarn is Paton’s Classic Wool Merino.

Mystic Star swatch

On January 15, 2009, in lace, Mystic Star, swatch, by Anna

The swatch pattern has been posted for the Mystic Star KAL. My swatch is knit in Tencel 10/2 from Yarntopia Treasures. It is NOT in the Seaweed colourway which I used for the shawl, but in New York – I had some leftover and used it for the swatch. :-)

Sign-ups for the KAL are closed, but the complete pattern is available for purchase here.

Fish Hat II

On January 14, 2009, in hat, by Anna

Fish Hat number 2 has been completed. This time I modified the pattern to make it a lot smaller, and it fit beautifully.
The yarn is Paton’s Classic Wool Merino – leftovers from the Weasley sweaters.

Fish Hat

On January 13, 2009, in hat, by Anna

My latest finished object is a Fish Hat from the 2008 Winter issue of Knitty. The yarn is Paton’s Classic Wool Merino – leftovers from the Gryffindor sweater.

The pattern comes in one size only, but is definitely too large for a 3 year old. I will therefore have to modify the pattern and make a smaller one ASAP. :-)

Weasley Sweaters

On January 12, 2009, in sweater, by Anna

The second Weasley sweater is finished. So now we have a Gryffindor sweater to the left and a Slytherin sweater to the right.

If I knit another one I will be sure to make the sleeves shorter than the pattern calls for. Aside from that, I think they are pretty nice. So do the recipients. They are both wearing their Weasley sweaters today. And of course I immediately got a request for a Hufflepuff sweater as well……
