On December 31, 2008, in KAL, lace, Mystic Star, pattern, shawl, by Anna

Announcing the Mystic Star Shawl knitalong!

Mystic Star is a circular shawl which draws its inspiration from the starry night sky.
There will also be a semicircular version of the shawl available.

The finished diameter is approximately 130 cm (51”)

My shawl is knit on 3.25 mm needles, using 10/2 Tencel (laceweight) yarn from Yarntopia Treasures (1,050 yds per 4 oz skein) in the Seaweed colourway. The circular shawl uses 1 skein (approx 1,050 yds), and the semicircular shawl uses approx. 1/2 skein (550 yds). The 10/2 Tencel is available on Etsy and on eBay.
As always, yarn substitutions are encouraged.

Mystic Ice Lace Shawl

On December 26, 2008, in lace, Mystic Ice, pattern, shawl, by Anna

This shawl draws its inspiration from winter, and in particular the breathtaking icicles found during the early and late parts of winter. It’s a very light and airy lace shawl.
The shawl can be knit as a square shawl (150 x 150 cm) or a triangular shawl (w: 175 cm, h: 87 cm).

My shawl is knit on 3.25 mm needles, using 10/2 Tencel (laceweight) yarn from Yarntopia Treasures (1,050 yds per 4 oz skein) in the New York colourway. The square shawl uses 2 skeins (approx. 2,100 yds) of the Tencel yarn, and the triangular shawl uses 1 skein (approx 1,050 yds).

This pattern is available in .pdf format for $8.00 CDN. Please place your order here:

Mystic Ice comes in two separate files. The MysticIceInstructions contain the beginning and finishing instructions, as well as the legends. All the charts are in MysticIceCharts.

Scarf Naming Contest

On December 15, 2008, in contest, lace, scarf, by Anna

I have started knitting a new lace scarf. The yarn is Bamboo Cotton blend (in the Olive colourway) from Yarntopia Treasures – 420 yds/4 oz skein.
Lightly stretched, it’s about 34 cm wide.
I really like how the colours are pooling on the sides of the scarf, to make the leaves more solid in colour.

My scarf is as of yet nameless, but *you* can help me name it. Let’s make it a contest. Put your name suggestions in the comments, and the prize will be a copy of the pattern.
The contest is open until Dec 30, and I’ll announce the winner on New Years Eve.

New Yarn!

On December 4, 2008, in yarn, by Anna

My new yarn arrived from Yarntopia today. From top to bottom it’s 100% Bamboo in Emerald, a Bamboo/Cotton blend in Olive Oil, and 6/2 Rayon Tencel in Raindrop.

The emerald yarn is sport weight, and the other two are fingering weight. I’m itching to start using it, and even though I already have one vacation project planned, I think one of these skeins will have to sneak into the bag as well.
Aside from that, the Wollmeise in Rosenrot is coming with me. That shawl is already in progress (I had to cast on and get through the first 40 rows or so just to make sure I knew what the gauge was, to size the shawl). Seeing as how the yarn is so difficult to get a hold of, I can’t run out of yarn…. :-)

I’m also working on the Weasley Sweater. I have completed the back and about half of the front, so it’s moving along nicely. The reason it’s taking so long to get through it is that I only have very limited time to work on it while the recipient is not around, and I would really like it to be a surprise. Oh well…. there is still some time left before it has to be wrapped.

Multiple Projects

On November 24, 2008, in Uncategorized, by Anna

The Mystic Ice KAL is underway, and some of the knitters have already posted pictures of their partial shawls. Looking at all the pictures has always been one of my favourite parts of the KALs. It’s so much fun to see the various yarns and colours other knitters have chosen, and how they bring out different elements of the design.

This time around, I’m also enjoying looking at the pictures of the triangular shawl. I’m very familiar with the square shawl (since I have one of my own), and of course I know that the triangular shawl is half that. But it’s still fun to see.

I have started knitting another Weasley sweater. This time it will be a Christmas present (shhh!), and I hope it will be ready in time. The problem is that I have very little time to work on it, as the recipient is usually around. But it’s a reasonably quick knit (given the time to do it), so I still have high hopes of finishing.

On the lace-shawl front, I am planning two projects. I have managed to get my hands on some of that elusive yarn called Wollmeise. I have one skein of Rosenrot Lace-Garn that I am planning on turning into a nice, big shawl. The reds are really reminiscent of roses, so the name is well chosen. And with 300 g, I should be able to end up with a large, warm shawl to wrap myself in.

*And* I have some more yarn coming from Yarntopia. This time it will be Tencel 5/2 in Moccassin (Mocha, Rust, Brown, and Chocolate) which will become a shawl. I’m also going to try her bamboo yarns, as well as the Rayon/Tencel blend. There are so many colours, it’s hard to choose, but I think it will be in Emerald, Raindrop, and Olive.

The Autumn Cardigan is still hibernating. I’m still gathering up the courage to pick up Fair Isle knitting again. It will probably be fine, but I did find that it was hard on my fingers even in the first place, and I don’t imagine it will be much better post-injury either. I rather lost my momentum there. :-) I had planned to have it finished in time for the fall colours in October, but…. there’s always next fall.

Baby Diaper Covers

On November 9, 2008, in Uncategorized, by Anna

One of my friends has recently taken up knitting (she’s knit a scarf and a hat), and decided to tackle something more difficult. She decided to knit some diaper covers, but got stuck on the pattern because she didn’t know how to join the stitches for knitting in the round. She brought her project here and I helped her.
When she left, she forgot the pattern here……
Very clever. So here we go. A few diaper covers for her newborn son. :-)

The pattern is available for free here. I used 2 skeins of Berroco Peruvia and 4.0 mm needles for the blue one, and 5.5 mm needles for the other two. I modified the ribbing to 1×1 ribbing, and the eyelet row to k1, yo, k2tog, p1.

Mystic Earth Lace Shawl

On October 28, 2008, in lace, Mystic Earth, pattern, stole, by Anna

This rectangular stole is the third shawl in the Mystic Elements series (following Mystic Waters and Mystic Light). Mystic Earth draws its inspiration from the solid earth beneath our feet. It’s constant presence, and its ever changing seasons.

The four sections of the stole represent the four seasons – spring, summer, fall and winter.

The pattern comes in two versions, so you can knit it as a stole or a scarf.

My shawl is knit on 3.75 mm needles, using 154 g (seven skeins) of Buffalo Down yarn from Cottage Craft Angora (155-160 yds per 22 g skein). The stole uses approx. 1,100 yds of laceweight yarn, and the scarf about half that. As always, yarn substitutions are encouraged.
The blocked dimensions are approx. 65 cm x 201 cm (25.6″ x 79″) for the stole.

This pattern is available in .pdf format for $8.00 CDN. Please place your order here:

Mystic Earth comes in two separate files. The MysticEarthInstructions contain the beginning and finishing instructions, as well as the legends. All the charts are in MysticEarthCharts.
