Summer is a great time to be knitting lace shawls. Although if you know me, you’d know that just about any time of the year is a good time for lace. Nonetheless, when it’s warm outside, it’s nice to be working on a lighter project. I just finshed a shawl knit out of an Icelandic laceweight. The yarn is similar to lopi, in that it feels as if it’s straight from the farm. And in this case, the colour was an undyed, natural white. The yarn has a natural halo from the fibers, and the resulting fabric was almost like clouds.
At the same time, I’ve been working on a brand new design in gold coloured Glacier Ice lace from Rocky Mountain Dyeworks. The feel of this yarn is completely different. Soft and luxurious, and yet still with a halo to make the lacy items glow in the sunlight. And the colour – Egyptan Gold – really does glow in the sun.
The two projects have been great complementary projects. While they are both laceknitting, the gold shawl pattern I’ve memorized and can knit without referring to the pattern very often. The white one, however, has not been knit from memory. It’s a good thing the pattern was never far away. While it’s been great fun, it hasn’t beem social knitting, if you know what I mean. Well, that one is complete and has been sent away for photography. You’ll see it in its finished form in the early fall. Time to cast on for something new. Next up is a pair of fingerless gloves for the collection.
