Firestar Poncho

On March 26, 2009, in Firestar, poncho, by Anna

This poncho is for my friend’s daughter who will be spending the next 6 months in the hospital to recover from major surgery.

It was suggested that a poncho would be a useful garment for their early morning and evening walks outside the hospital in the spring and the summer, as it’s quick to put on and take off.

The pattern is rather inspired by AnneM’s wonderful Spiderman blanket and Revontuli shawl, but I made a 12 pointed star instead.

I used approx 200 g Kauni Effectgarn 8/2 and 4.0 mm needles.

CO 96 sts & join together
work k2,p2 ribbing for ca. 10 cm neck
then knit one round
after that work rounds as follows:

  1. k1, yo, k X sts, sl2-k1-psso, k X sts, yo 12 times
  2. knit
  3. k1, yo, k X sts, sl2-k1-psso, k X sts, yo 12 times
  4. knit
  5. k1, yo, k Y sts, yo 12 times
  6. knit repeat these 6 rounds, with y increasing with 2 sts every 6 rounds, and Y=2X+1. The first time X=2

Near the end continue in pattern but switch to garter stitch (the plain knit rows become purls) for 1 inch or so, and when you purl into the YOs purl into the back loop of the stitch to close up the hole for a solid edge.
Bind off with lace-bindoff.
